The 50 people who attended the Senior potluck Monday were privileged to hear Arlen Twedt present a program about his book, which details the settlement of Norwegians in our county in the middle 1800’s. We learned that the first settlers came to Illinois, but found that land was cheaper in Iowa, so they resettled in central Iowa where land was only $1.25 per acre. They settled first southwest of Cambridge in 1854 and then near Roland the following year. By 1860 the census count showed 388 Norwegians living in Story County, which was 10 percent of the total population. Arlen’s book “The Central Iowa Norwegians” can be purchased on Amazon.
The main activity at the Center next week will be on Monday for our waffle and sausage breakfast. Serving will be from 8 a.m. till 10 and we only ask for a small donation to cover expenses. Please mark that day on your calendar and come and enjoy breakfast with friends.
